Using ‘environmentally friendly’ and other hot social issues merely as a marketing ploy won’t wash with New Zealand customers. If you take a position on an issue as a business, you need to do more than live it and breath it – you need to innovate.

One company that is doing just that is Nerra.

Nerra appears to be genuinely reinventing the old bicycle in ways that are beyond your imagination. They go way beyond the traditional 3R’s of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

The modern building industry is a case in point. Due to its low cost and high performance, concrete is the go-to material for creating mass structural strength; however, it is massively costly to the environment.

When you consider the bicycle, and there are many millions of them made every year, the frame itself is also highly costly on the environment. You need only contemplate the massive piles of bicycle churned out from Asia to confirm the truth of this.

No matter if the frame is made from steel, aluminium or carbon fibre, the net cost measured in 3R terms is excessive and avoidable.

Nerra is working at the cutting edge of technology. With that comes information sensitivity– as we experienced with the AC75’s in the America’s Cup. It is one of these engineers who has been behind some of this development at Nerra.

So, all I can say at this stage is: imagine a bike made from organic compounds and organic epoxies that are 100% environmentally friendly. They have not confirmed their final choice but are researching raw ingredients like sheep wool, hemp and even a rock fibre. Their work will blow your mind – and on top of this, these new materials will also outperform high-end materials like carbon fibre in areas that carbon fibre are vulnerable.

So here is your early warning. Have you watched the movie, Forrest Gump? Do you recall when Forrest was mega-wealthy and did not know how he got there? His friend had bought some shares in a fruit company, a company called Apple.

Well, that is precisely where I think Nerra is placed. The name will become famous, and its roots are firmly entrenched in New Zealand. Watch the press; there will be more to follow.

On some metrics, not all and CF will easily outperform overall.
