Quail Ridge Country Club in Kerikeri has introduced a “try before you buy” experience that allows prospective residents to live within the village for a short period before making a decision, offering a level of immersion that extends well beyond a standard viewing.
The experience includes an overnight stay, a full day built around golf and surrounding facilities, along with use of a golf cart and a bar tab. Guests are accommodated in a way that reflects how life is actually lived at Quail Ridge, with time and space to move through the village, use its amenities, and engage with residents if they wish.
Business Development Manager at Quail Ridge Country Club Retirement Village Glenn Roberts says the approach reflects the expectations of buyers who are making a considered lifestyle decision rather than a quick property choice.
“People want to understand how it feels to live here, not just what a home looks like,” he says. “You can’t get that from a short visit. When you stay, you wake up here, you move through the day on your own terms, and you start to see whether it fits.
“You stay for a well-appointed home, using the facilities, and experiencing the lifestyle as it is.”
The programme has been designed with out-of-town buyers in mind, particularly those travelling from Auckland and other centres who are considering their retirement options.
“For people coming from further afield, it gives them the time they need,” Roberts says. “You’re not trying to make a decision in a few hours. You can spend a couple of days here, see how it feels, and take that experience with you when you’re thinking it through.”
Located in Kerikeri, Quail Ridge Country Club has been developed as a country club-style community for people who value independence, space, and the ability to continue living actively. The village is set across landscaped grounds within the Bay of Islands, with homes designed for everyday living and shared spaces that support social connection without imposing structure.
The surrounding region forms part of the appeal. Access to golf, waterways, walking tracks, and the wider Bay of Islands environment allows residents to remain engaged with the activities and routines they value, while the village itself provides a setting that reduces the practical demands of home ownership.
The “try before you buy” experience complements a series of open homes scheduled for Thursday 30 April, where prospective buyers can view available properties after spending time in the village environment:
- 1 pm – 27 Cottle
- 1:30 pm – 33 Cottle
- 2pm – 14 Leatham
- 2:30pm – 61 Cottle
Roberts says that by the time visitors walk through a home, they have already formed a view about the lifestyle.
“You’re not starting from zero when you look at a property,” he says. “You’ve already spent time here, you’ve seen how your day might unfold, and that makes the decision clearer.”
Quail Ridge Country Club’s approach reflects a broader shift in how retirement living is being considered, with buyers placing greater weight on environment, autonomy, and day-to-day experience. By offering a short stay that mirrors real life within the village, the “try before you buy” programme allows that decision to be made with a level of clarity that is difficult to achieve through traditional inspections alone.
